Last summer when I was making Ashley's pillow, my friend's son decided he wanted to make one too. He picked out the fabric for 4 patchwork squares on the front, and he picked out and handcut 4 fabrics for 4 shapes which he hand-sewed to the squares. (A circle, a square, a heart, and a moon) It was pretty difficult too for a 6 year old to push a big fat needle through some dense canvas and corduroy. (I'm not too practiced at picking out projects for kids.) He did a really great job on the circle and the heart, and just kinda tacked on the square. By the time he got to the moon I was really busy and he was really frustrated to be left to his own devices and not done yet. He made really HUGE stitches which puckered up the fabric and pissed him off. I hung the square on the wall and it stayed there until yesterday, when I saw my little friend just walking around the yard kicking things. He saw me and started talking about his imaginary knitting projects that he'd been working on "for a really long time". I had some other things to do that afternoon but I was inspired to help him finish his pillow first. He dug through my treasure box of fabric scraps and found aqua denim for the back. I gave him a break on the moon and zig-zagged it on for him. We talked about how when he was working on this pillow he was 6, and it would probably be easier for him now that he's 7, and more patient. We stuffed it together, and when I sewed it up and tossed it to him he was so STOKED. It was a simple project, and only took a few minutes of my time to help him finish. Why did I let it hang on the wall for so long? We took a bunch of pictures of the pillow, and him with it. He wanted a picture of the pillow in the air. When he was just about convinced that it was impossible, and I'm too slow with the camera, I caught this one.
